The most widely-recognized and most prestigious Afro-Peruvian ballet of all times, Peru Negro, is celebrating its 45th anniversary with two gala performances at the historic and majestic theater Teatro Municipal in Lima.

Founded in February 1969 by Ronaldo Campos de la Colina, Peru Negro school has trained dozens of artists in our country for 45 years and is the place where stars like Lucila Campos and Caitro Soto have shined.

Source of extraordinary artists, dancers, musicians, cajon players, zapateadores (dancers who beat time with the sole of their shoe) and singers in the local scene, this Afro-Peruvian ballet is a landmark in the history of Peruvian dance and music, a cultural institution that has set a precedent at all levels: complex and cheerful choreography, flashy clothing, perfect movement accuracy, pioneers in Peruvian cajon competition and unique performance.

Peru Negro was nominated for a Latin Grammy Award in the Traditional Folk Music category in 2004 and for a Grammy Award in the Best Traditional World Music Album for Jolgorio in 2005.

Furthermore, the school has taken Afro-Peruvian folklore around the world in countries such as Mexico, Morocco, Brazil, Cuba, Spain, Argentina, Panama, Ecuador, Trinidad and Tobago, Martinique, Paraguay, Chile, Canada and the United States.

Auditoriums of the most renowned universities in the United States have been used for Afro-Peruvian percussion, tap-dance classes and amazing shows as well.

Peru Negro will perform two luxury shows at the Lima-based Teatro Municipal on October 16 and 17. Tickets are already on sale and can be purchased at Teleticket stands of Wong and Metro supermarkets.
