Peru: Ministers coordinate actions to mitigate 'El Niño' phenomenon impact

Four Ministers of State toured around the BAP Tacna vessel that will sail to Peru's Northern Piura region carrying 18,000 tons of humanitarian aid for citizens affected by the impact of El Nino climate phenomenon.

The Ministers of Agriculture, Juan Manuel Benites; Housing, Milton Von Hesse; Transport and Communications, José Gallardo; and Interior, José Luis Pérez Guadalupe, supervised the preparation.

Aid will be distributed to storages located in Tumbes, Piura, Lambayeque and La Libertad, regions likely to be affected by the phenomenon.

On Monday, the ship will participate in the El Niño drill set to take place.

The Agriculture Minister informed Peruvian Navy officials about the multisectoral work undertaken to mitigate the impacts of El Nino climate phenomenon, which real magnitude is to be known in November, according to experts. At the site, he reconfirmed the government is “better trained” to face such emergency.

After assuring that protecting the population is the most important purpose of the preventive actions, Benites indicated that BAP Tacna will permanently stay in Northern Peru.

Similarly, he told the media the other Peruvian Navy vessel (BAP Callao) sailed to the same destination yesterday.

Other 19 Peruvian Air Force transport aircrafts and over 20 helicopters will join search and rescue operations with the Peruvian National Police.
