History suggests that countries that use their resources and opportunities efficiently enjoy the highest growth rates and per capita income levels.

"Peru is clearly a mining country," as it always ranks among the largest producers worldwide when analyzing global production per metal.

This was one of the main conclusions of a monthly roundtable on economic analysis held by El Peruano official gazette and Andina news agency.

The panel discussion featured National Confederation of Private Business Associations (Confiep) President Roque Benavides, BCR Economic Studies Central Manager Adrian Armas, former Deputy Mines Minister Romulo Mucho and Economic and Social Research Consortium (CIES) Executive Director Javier Portocarrero.

The start of important mining operations in 2018 is expected to underpin GDP growth and create new jobs in the Andean nation.

Peru awaits decisions on mining projects such as Justa (US$744 million), Quellaveco (US$5 billion), Michiquillay (US$1 billion) and Magistral (US$300 million).

Energy and Mines Ministry (MEM) said the Michiquillay project should be awarded via ProInversion on November 15, whereas Quellaveco's is set to be announced by the first half of next year.
