Peruvian Defense Minister Jorge Nieto underlined that air-drug-trafficking over Valley of Apurimac, Ene and Mantaro rivers' (Vraem) emergency zones have experienced significant reduction.

According to the cabinet member, crucial measures have been adopted to combat said scourge.

Within this framework, Peru's Air Force has destroyed clandestine airstrips, as well as carried out aerial interdictions.

Likewise, Nieto stressed the essential role of military and police intelligence squads in monitoring the area despite its complex geography.

Although aerial interdiction operations must be strengthened, a great deal of progress has been made so far, the government official concluded.
