World's renowned Inca City of Machu Picchu became one of Peru's most visited tourist attractions in 2015.

Over 1,100,000 travelers may have entered this top archaeological complex last year, sanctuary's Chief Juan Carlos Nieto forecasted.

According to Nieto, this cultural site generates "greater interest among domestic and foreign tourists every year."

"The exact number of visitors will be released this week. In 2014, 1,100,000 visitors were registered. We know there was an increase in 2015; thus it’s very likely the figure was exceeded [...]," he told Andina news agency.

The official said the Inca City is Machu Picchu’s heart. Thus, he hoped travelers will visit diverse complexes located within the 37,000-hectare site.

In this sense, a series of multisectoral campaigns will be launched to promote new routes and attractions found in the area declared as a Historic Sanctuary 35 years ago.

The declaration was intended to preserve and protect biodiversity, as well as the over 190 monuments it hosts, such as Machu Picchu citadel.

It must be noted the natural protected zone shelters 4,187 species (among flora and fauna) and 12 ecological systems.
