The majestic Inca citadel of Machu Picchu has once again conquered global tourism rankings, this time leading U.S. News and World Report's Best Affordable Vacations in Central and South America list.
While acknowledging the costs of the iconic landmark, U.S. News names Machu Picchu as its number one
affordable vacation in the region, recommending Sep-Nov for more affordable accommodations.
The site describes the lost city of the Incas as South America's "greatest spectacle" and "one of the most impressive architectural feats of the
ancient world."
In addition, the fabled ruins are closely followed by fellow Peruvian attraction Cusco, which takes the second spot in the
multi-platform publisher's rankings.
The media outlet backs its choice of the Imperial City giving plenty of reasons to visit the archaeological capital of the Americas.
From its storied history depicted in centuries-old baroque cathedrals to exquisite stone masonry, U.S. News highlights Cusco's unique blend of Andean and Spanish cultures, which simply makes it "like no other place on Earth."
As no mention of Peru is complete without its world-renowned cuisine, the U.S. news provider also includes some mouth-watering suggestions.
"If you're feeling a bit more adventurous, try cuy [roasted guinea pig – yes, the American household pet] or charbroiled alpaca [...]," it adds.
Travel tips also include ways to save money, get around the city, as well as enter and exit Peru.
"It only takes a day to be charmed by this significant Peruvian city and all its wonders," the publication affirms.
Cusco also ranks 6th in the Best Places to Visit in Central and South America list, outperformed by Lima, which takes the 3rd spot.
