Peru looks to progress on five free trade agreements in 2014

15:02 | Lima, Dec. 21 (ANDINA).

Peru’s Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Magali Silva has said her ministry is working to secure five new free trade agreements with countries around the world in order to further cement the Andean country's presence in overseas markets.

Minister Silva said that Russia, India, Turkey, Indonesia, and El Salvador have expressed interest in negotiating free trade agreements with Peru.

“The country that we’ve progressed most with in talks is Turkey, however, we have a lot of progress with El Salvador, a country that asked us to restart negotiations,” Silva was quoted as saying by Peruthisweek.com.

Silva added that talks with Russia and Indonesia have also been initiated. After the recent visit of Indian vice president Mohammad Ansari, both nations expressed interest in opening negotiations for a future free trade agreement.

“The arrival at an agreement doesn’t depend just on Peru, but also on the priorities of the government that we’re negotiating with,” Silva cautioned.

“We always work with the determination to do our job well, and opening a free trade agreement means negotiations good terms for Peru, which is why it’s hard to predict how long negotiations will take,” added the minister.
