The Lima Historic Center Municipal Recovery Program (PROLIMA) and Lima Municipality's Culture Department have started marking all buildings declared national historic monuments with UNESCO's Blue Shield.

The marking follows the provisions of UNESCO and the 1954 Hague Convention, which adopted rules to protect cultural goods during armed conflicts after World War II.

These included the use of the distinctive emblem to identify cultural and historic property protected by the Convention.

"Thus, the Blue Shield was born. The project also lends its name to the International committee of the Blue Shield [ICBS], which works to protect global cultural heritage," PROLIMA Manager Luis Martin Bogdanovich explained.

PROLIMA began notifying Lima Historic Center's cultural property owners of the said building-marking last October. Their identification is aimed at recognizing the country's monumental property to facilitate their protection.

The program is also keeping a record of all buildings bearing the symbol. Once completed, said list will be made available to UNESCO and the Culture Ministry.
