Peru’s Private Investment Promotion Agency (ProInversion) has started the process of selecting operators for fiber-optic network projects in four regions across the Andean nation.

The projects will benefit Apurimac, Ayacucho, Huancavelica and Lambayeque regions and stipulate the deployment of a fiber optic transport network as well as access infrastructure for the provision of telecoms services in these four regions.

The agency has opened a tender for four projects to provide internet access to nearly 3,000 public and private institutions, as well as the general public, in four regions through the deployment of a fiber-optic backbone network.

In total, the projects will serve 1,169 communities, covering 757,000 people and will require the installation of 5,201km of fiber-optic cable.

Two of the regions covered are Apurimac (248 communities, 123,000 people and 1,409km of cable) and Ayacucho (304 communities, 179,000 people and 1,898km of cable).

Likewise, 302,000 people in 309 communities will benefit from a 567km network in Lambayeque, northern Peru.

On the other hand, the project in Huancavelica will serve 308 communities and provide 143,000 people with 1,327km of cable.

It should be noted that the said projects will be financed by the Telecommunications Investment Fund (Fitel – Fondo de Inversion en Telecomunicaciones).

According to ProInversion, prequalification of bidders will take place by late October and the projects will be awarded in December, 2014
