Peru launches re-election candidacy for International Maritime Organization Council

Peru officially launched its candidature bid for re-election to Category C of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council on Tuesday afternoon, the Foreign Affairs Ministry informed.

Peruvian Embassy in the United Kingdom presented the Inca country's candidacy in a ceremony aboard Peruvian Navy ship BAP Union in London waters.

Addressing more than 150 delegates, ambassadors and IMO officials, Ambassador Claudio de la Puente underlined Peru's strong commitment to IMO objectives, as well as its ongoing active involvement in a range of committees and work groups.

The envoy, who also serves as Peru's permanent representative to IMO, highlighted the historical maritime and naval tradition of the Andean nation.

Similarly, the diplomat placed emphasis on his homeland's potential to contribute to the organization and its member states through polar oceanographic research vessel BAP Carrasco.

The ceremony also included the screening of a video statement by President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski, inviting attendees to support the Peruvian bid.

Peru – IMO

The International Maritime Organization is the United Nations specialized agency with responsibility for the safety and security of shipping and the prevention of marine pollution by ships. 

Peru has been a member of IMO's Council since 2013, a position it seeks to sustain at the organization's coming elections in November.
