First Vice-President Martin Vizcarra believes the current administration has undertaken important steps during the first year since President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski took office.

This progress was achieved despite unfavorable conditions like Coastal El Niño weather phenomenon and Lava Jato (Car Wash) scandal.

Some of the achievements include improvements in education indicators, apprehension of criminal gangs, as well as various infrastructure and road works such as Jauja airport and the cable car system to Kuelap Fortress.

"Public safety will improve for sure, as nearly 1,000 criminals have been detained, and there will be 6,000 police officers on the street [starting August]," he told RPP radio and TV station.

Additionally, 1 million inhabitants gained access to drinking water. Plus, 27,000 houses and 55 bridges were built across the country.

The government official affirmed that important issues like these tend to remain hidden because of political noise.

"I am convinced this second year will provide us with more optimism because we have the conditions to move forward and grow. We just need to put them into practice," he said.
