Peruvian President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski has become a member of the High-Level Panel on Water, an initiative established by the United Nations and the World Bank to take action on water around the world.

The Peruvian leader took part in the second meeting that issued a “Call to Action” that advocates for a fundamental shift in the way the world looks at water.

He said more than 2 billion people are affected by the lack of water, and this estimate is projected to increase over the next decades due to the increasing demand and climate change related hazards.

“To end the scourge of poverty, a precondition is to cut the Gordian knot of water scarcity and inadequate sanitation, thus facilitating rapid and inclusive development and the formalization of the economy,” he said in his speech.

The incorporation of Peru into the High-Level Panel on Water responds to priority public policies designed by the government to cope with this serious problem and to the country’s commitment to bringing water services all over the country by 2021.

In a joint statement, leaders recognized both the human right to safe drinking water and sanitation.

They also emphasized the need for all to take responsibility for managing water better and for a comprehensive and coordinated approach to water.

They presented the action plan which outlines new investments to meet these basic needs.

Panel members include heads of state from Mauritius (Co-Chair), Mexico (Co-Chair), Australia, Bangladesh, Hungary, Jordan, The Netherlands, Peru, Senegal, South Africa and Tajikistan.
