A 39-year-old woman in the jungle region of Iquitos has given birth to one of the biggest babies ever born in Peru - a boy weighing 6.7kg (about 14lbs 12oz).

The chubby baby, called Gabriel, was born on Feb. 22 at the III Iquitos EsSalud hospital via cesarean section due to his size.

The mother, Irma Castro Peña, hails from Caballococha, which is located near the border with Colombia. She had to be evacuated from the town when she presented severe signs of preeclampsia.

The baby is currently under observation at the hospital, where he has become known as “the superbaby” by staff.

Doctors want to monitor Gabriel because of his unusual size, as well as some possible breathing problems that have been observed when he cries. He will be evaluated by a cardiac pediatrician as well.

Gabriel is the eighth child in his family and it is unknown if any of his siblings were of an unusual size at birth.
