The number of poor households owning at least one mobile phone climbed to 75.1% in 2015, a 4.8% increase from the previous year (70.3%), the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) informed.

Likewise, the number of homes with access to cable TV expanded by 0.1% (from 10.7% to 10.8%) in the same period of time.

"Generally, the increase observed in poor households access to Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) leads to reducing the gap existing between poor and non-poor segments of society," it affirmed.

Concerning landline use, a reduction was seen both at poor (0.9%) and non-poor (2.9%) households.

According to the World Bank Group, technological progress is a driving force behind economic growth, citizen engagement and job creation.

ICTs, in particular, are reshaping many aspects of the world’s economies, governments and societies.

Public officials, businesses and citizens in developing countries can harness the transformative power of ICTs to provide more efficient services, catalyze economic growth and strengthen social networks, it added.
