The Inca Trail Network to the sanctuary of Machu Picchu was reopened on Wednesday after being closed throughout February for maintenance and preservation.
Announcement was made by State-run Decentralized Culture Directorate of Cusco (DDCC) head Vidal Pino Zambrano.
Workers performed maintenance on architectural structures like buildings, agricultural terraces, water sources and contention walls along the path during 28 days.
Likewise, they removed roots that were causing damage to the walls, cleared the way of brush and green waste, as well as performed ground treatment and maintenance on bridges and stair rails.
They also conducted rehabilitation works on camping areas for visitors. These zones were damaged last year due to the large number of visitors.
Other works undertaken while the path was closed include cleaning and rehabilitation of drainage systems, strengthening of the end of walls, rehabilitation of stone staircases and maintenance of rest sites, among others. They were all monitored by archaeologists specialized in pre-Hispanic structures.
"I congratulate the Inca Trail Network personnel for their great effort, since they worked under adverse weather conditions such as heavy rains," Pino pointed out.
Maintenance works will continue in March, but in minor sectors, so they do not disturb the flow of visitors.
