Peru: Ichuña Carnival declared National Cultural Heritage
Lima, Dec. 6.
The Ichuña Carnival, celebrated in General Sanchez Cerro province (Moquegua region), was declared National Cultural Heritage by Peru's Executive Power.
According to the legal norm published in El Peruano official gazette, the Ichuña Carnival is a cultural event that unites communities and population centers from Ichuña district.
This festivity strengthens the local identity and creates a communication space for people from different generations.
The document also notes that the Warayoq's complex organization system constitutes one of the most important aspects of this festival.
Due to the complexity of its organization and the different tasks allocated to the participating communities, the Executive Power describes the Ichuña Carnival as the representation of an ideal structure, based on Andean perspective.
It means a duality of opposing and complementary pairs, expressed in the cultural area or micro-region comprising Ichuña populations.
Ichuña Carnival is celebrated for three consecutive days featuring the participation of hundreds of locals.
Many people from different parts of the country also travel to said town to take part in the activities.
