Peru has triumphed over Korea to take the gold medal 2-1 in a tight-fought finale to the men's football competition in front of a capacity crowd at the Jiangning Sports Centre Stadium on Wednesday.

In the first 15 minutes of the game both teams struggled to find their way into the match. It was only after a brilliant combination play by Korea’s offence and a goal by Jeong Wooyeong that the game came alive.

With equal chances on both sides it was mainly thanks to goalkeepers Korea’s Kim Seungha and Catytuiro Fabrian of Peru that score remained static until the half time break.

Soon after the break, Peru launched a fast and skillful attack that saw Franklin Gil overrunning the Korean defenses and scoring a goal in the 41st minute, tying for 1-1.

Fourteen minutes later, tears of joy rolled down the cheeks of the Peruvian team, when captain Fernando Pacheco scored the 2-1 with a brilliant chip.

The highly competitive last 24 minutes of the game had the Peruvian fans on their feet and chanting in support of their team.

In the end, the 2-1 was enough for Peru and their dream of clinching the gold medal.

"Our boys are incredibly proud, to come all the way from South America and win the gold medal," said Chef de Mission Alonso de la Guerra.
