The Government of Peru is working on the protocol to implement the court decision that requires public healthcare centers to offer free emergency contraceptives —known as morning-after pills— to women all over the country.

Remarks were made by Prime Minister Fernando Zavala at the end of the fourth session of the Council of Ministers at the Government Palace in Lima.

Zavala said the Executive respects judicial rulings, as is the case of the court decision ordering the distribution of such medication.

“As [Health] Minister Garcia said, the ruling will be implemented within the following 30 days, and this requires a protocol that is being developed,” he said during the press briefing.

In light of the Peruvian Episcopal Conference questions on free distribution of emergency contraceptives, Zavala said it is the Executive’s duty to adapt to the laws and resolutions of the Judiciary.

“The Judiciary has issued a resolution that forces us to implement the mechanism over the next 30 days; if no change is observed, we will proceed to implement it,” the senior official continued.
