Peruvian government plans to allocate 2.5 billion soles (US$ 893 million) for the construction and upgrade of national highways between August and October this year, the Transportation and Communications Ministry (MTC) reported Thursday.

Jose Gallardo, the sector’s head, stated the initiative is expected to be executed by state-run nationwide plan called Provias which oversees large-scale projects related to Peru's national highway system.

The minister noted related investment into the transportation sector has decreased during the stretch from January to May, due to the heavy rains across the country which has put a dampen on some massive spending construction projects as they have been impacted by weather conditions

"Nevertheless, investments [in the transportation sector] are likely to rebound in the second half of the year and road construction works will continue to be carried out", he told Andina news agency.

Likewise, the high-level government official stressed that corruption cases detected in some regional governments have also contributed to stall of investments in the country's inner regions.

Gallardo went on to note that each region within the nation has received a fairly complete infrastructure package for the construction of roads, bridges and maintenance works.

Provias is the authority responsible for the execution of construction projects, enhancement, rehabilitation and maintenance of the national road network.

Its purpose is to provide users a means of safe and efficient transportation, thus contributing to the economic and social integration of the country.
