Peruvian President Ollanta Humala visited the northern region of Amazonas last Thursday to inaugurate a rural electrification project that will benefit 7,250 people in the provinces of Bagua and Utcubamba.

The project, which carried an investment of 7.41 million soles, will provide electricity services to 1,675 homes in the districts of La Peca and Cumba (Bagua) and Yamon (Utcubamba).

Speaking at the ribbon cutting ceremony in the town of Chonza Alta, Humala highlighted the importance of electricity to the development of the neediest communities in the country.

"Electricity extends work and study hours and allows families to spend more time together at night," said the president, who distributed portable LPG stove cylinders among locals.

Also attending the ceremony were Transport and Communications Minister Carlos Paredes; Housing, Construction and Sanitation Minister Rene Cornejo; and Energy and Mines Minister Jorge Merino, all of whom took part in the 10th Decentralized Cabinet Meeting in the Luya district of Amazonas.
