The Government of Peru on Thursday began the distribution of S/1,000 (about US$304) per-hectare payments in northern Piura region to compensate agricultural damage caused by recent "Coastal El Niño" phenomenon floods.

The government thus plans to benefit close to 14,400 farmers in need of resources to rehabilitate flood-stricken agricultural lands.

Subsidies are part of the Agriculture Ministry's post-disaster reactivation program valued at S/256 million (about US$77.86 million), Minister Jose Manuel Hernandez explained.

Funding for natural disaster payments is valued at S/20 million (about US$6.08 million), with an additional S/25 million (about US$7.6 million) allocated for temporary crops and fruit plantations.

Reconstruction

In addition to distribution of subsidies, the Executive works on the rebuilding of damaged and destroyed infrastructure in northern areas.

In this sense, President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski on Thursday participated in the first stone laying ceremony held for Venados Bridge in Piura's Sullana province.

Speaking at the event, the Head of State congratulated local authorities on their post-disaster reconstruction efforts, and urged them to complete the venture as early as possible.

The flood-proof 300-meter structure will facilitate traffic flow in the area, Transport and Communications Minister Martin Vizcarra informed.

The project requires an investment of S/48 million (about US$14.6 million).
