Peruvian Foreign Affairs Minister Ricardo Luna on Monday addressed private sector representatives in New York on the need to prevent corruption from denting infrastructure project development in the region.

The government official presented Peru's foreign policy outlooks to members of the Council of the Americas (COA), institution composed of the main U.S. business and academia figures related to Latin America.

Minister Luna said States need to adjust their foreign policies in response to the current global scenario, marked by populist and protectionist trends challenging economic globalization and the existing international order.

Likewise, he stressed the need to prevent further deterioration of public confidence in democratic institutions given the various changes affecting Latin America, such as electoral cycles, the Venezuelan crisis and transnational corruption cases.

Regional integration

On the other hand, the Foreign Minister urged that regional integration be deepened and binational cabinets be promoted.

In the case of Peru, Pacific Alliance (PA) members will seek the consolidation of the bloc. To this end, PA presidents will hold a virtual meeting on March 9 to review their joint outlook on the global economic and trade context.

Likewise, he shared Peru's intention to relaunch the Inter-American system at the next Summit of the Americas to be held in Lima in April 2018.

Luna also reiterated the Inca nation's commitment to integration in the Asia-Pacific region, as well as its determination to strengthen ties with European partners and carry on working towards OECD accession.

Lastly, he assured Peru will contribute to redesigning and consolidating multilateral institutions with a view to rebuilding global governance.
