Maintaining positive ties with the United States is paramount for Peru, since it is a major strategic and trade partner, Foreign Affairs and Tourism Minister Eduardo Ferreyros highlighted.

Remarks came while addressing the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), a subject in which Peru "must be patient and wait to see how events unfold."

In this sense, Ferreyros noted the country can always negotiate FTAs with Pacific Rim nations it does not have trade agreements with, while maintaining good relations with the U.S., which is "a key strategic partner."

Regarding the country's trade agenda, the government official underlined progress made with FTAs.

"With India, for instance, we are already working on regulations," he stressed.

He also referred to the Peru-Honduras FTA, which entered into force on January 1, 2017. Said arrangement is to have a positive impact on small-scale entrepreneurs and offer "the advantage of reaching another Spanish-speaking market."

Peru is also negotiating FTAs with Indonesia and Australia.

On the other hand, the American Chamber of Commerce in Peru (AmCham) reiterated the need to maintain positive ties with the U.S.

"It is pivotal that we preserve the FTA with the United States," affirmed Aldo Defilippi, AmCham Executive Director.
