Peru is hoping to find a niche for its handicrafts in Taiwan's gift market and tap into the growing popularity of ethnic-inspired style and fashion in the country, the Commercial Office of Peru in Taipei said Saturday.

"Peruvian handicrafts could create a buzz because their rich colors and textures are very different from the Asian tradition," said Estrella Teng, who is representing the office at a gift trade show being held in Taipei.

Participating for the first time this year in Giftionery Taipei, the office hopes to promote the quilts, painted glass and wood decorations being made by four Peruvian companies, Focustaiwan.tw reported her saying.

The market response has been positive so far, Teng said, with about two dozen local companies expressing interest in the products at the show.

The main thrust of the Taipei trade fair is to help Taiwanese exporters find overseas customers for their items, but the show has also become an important platform for foreign giftware and stationery companies looking to find local distributors and increase their presence in Taiwan's market, event organizers said.

According to the article published today, a record 530 exhibitors, including some from Bhutan, Nepal, Thailand and Japan, are present at the April 24-27 show.
