Peru has extended the state of emergency in towns in 14 regions for two more months, due to the imminent danger during the 2015-2016 rainy season, and to beware of possible damage that could result from El Niño climate phenomenon.

These regions include Tumbes, Piura, Lambayeque, La Libertad, Cajamarca, Amazonas, San Martin, Ancash, Ica, Lima, Arequipa, Cusco, Puno and Junin, as well as the Constitutional Province of Callao.

According to the Supreme Decree N°058-2015-PCM, the state of emergency will last for 60 days starting 4 September 2015 and will allow competent authorities to execute immediate and necessary actions to reduce climate-related risks and achieve restoration goals. 

The regional governments of Tumbes, Piura, Lambayeque, La Libertad, Cajamarca, Amazonas, San Martin, Ancash, Lima, Ica, Arequipa, Cusco, Puno, Junin and Callao, in addition to involved local governments, as the case may be, will implement immediate and necessary actions aimed at reducing the existing high risk and restoring the areas that might be affected in order to reestablish basic services and infrastructure in general.

Technical coordination and support will be provided by the National Civil Defense Institute (Indeci). Other participating agencies include the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation, the National Water Authority (ANA) and involved public, private institutions. 

The resolution was published today on El Peruano official gazette and inked by Peruvian President Ollanta Humala, Prime Minister Pedro Cateriano, and Agriculture Minister Juan Manuel Benites.
