Peru is likely to double exports through various trade facilitation projects, bilateral agreements and tourism promotion, Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Eduardo Ferreyros projected on Wednesday.

In this sense, the government official noted the country seeks to increase competitiveness.

"We are committed to doubling exports, reaching US$70 billion by 2021. A lot of this depends on mineral prices, but we will work on the non-traditional segment, which currently contributes US$11 billion in exports," he announced.

With respect to companies competitiveness, Ferreyros said the Ministry is working on adjustments to the foreign trade logistic chain, particularly concerning customs.

Economic reactivation

On the other hand, the American Chamber of Commerce in Peru (AmCham) stressed the role of trade facilitation and promotion for a competitive, solid and equitable economy.

"In today's international scenario, foreign trade and tourism are two of the sectors with the highest potential to reactivate the economy," AmCham Executive Director Aldo Defilippi affirmed.

"Thus, we must focus the bulk of our efforts on making the most of the markets we've opened and new ones, lifting barriers, speeding up the logistic chain, as well as the quality of the goods and services offered to the world," he pointed out.

Tourism and connectivity

Lastly, the minister referred to the relevance of promoting domestic tourism and enhancing connectivity among the country’s interior provinces.

In this sense, he underlined internal tourism brings opportunities for SMEs. Thus, the Ministry has recently launched Turismo Emprende, a S/2.5 million (about US$770,416) fund to foster private tourism enterpreneurial ventures.

Remarks were made during a trade promotion and facilitation event organized by the American Chamber of Commerce in Peru.
