Peru's Agriculture and Irrigation Ministry (Minagri) works on the implementation of an US$80 million project on Amazon rural land titling and registration partially financed by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), it was reported.
In this sense, Minagri has signed a framework agreement with regional authorities to coordinate the foundations of inter-institutional cooperation to execute cadaster, titling and registration activities.
These include carrying out cadastral surveys, developing a technological cadaster platform, as well as strengthening rural land titling capacities.
The said measures will allow thousands of
farmers and peasant communities to register their lands and obtain corresponding titles within the next three years, thus gaining access to the benefits of economic formalization.
In turn, land ownership will translate into higher income —and hence better living conditions— for this population, the Ministry highlighted.
In Loreto (one of the 10 target regions) alone, the project will address 17,000 lands for individual farmers, who will
benefit some 200 native communities.
The venture is in line with the current Agriculture administration, which underlines the relevance of land registration and titling to rural Amazon families' economic growth.
In this respect, Agriculture and Irrigation Minister Jose Manuel Hernandez noted the process will be joined by other Minagri services like Agrobanco (Agricultural bank) and
Sierra y Selva Exportadora program, among others.
"As the [Agriculture] Ministry, we will assess them by identifying the best lands —based on their conditions— for grazing, agricultural or forestry activities. That's our role," he pointed out.
