There are "correct political signs" which contribute to maintaining optimism required to reach a binding agreement at the United Nations Paris Climate Change Conference (COP21) officially started on Monday, Peru's Environment Minister Manuel Pulgar-Vidal affirmed.

At the event, 183 out of 195 countries have already submitted their national contributions regarding greenhouse-gas-emission reduction.

Likewise, Pulgar-Vidal stressed the climate finance meeting held last October in Lima during the Annual Meetings of the Boards of Governors of the World Bank Group (WBG) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

"There are correct political signs, which enable to maintain optimism a successful covenant will be consolidated within 9 days in Paris," the Minister underlined.

COP21 is held under extraordinary security measures, since nearly 40,000 registered delegates and 150 Heads of State and Government participate in the current edition.

At the same time, he mentioned the said event is one of the biggest COP meetings ever held, given that a negotiation process consolidation is expected with the purpose of preventing the planet’s temperature from climbing over 2° Celsius degrees.

Furthermore, Pulgar-Vidal informed that Lima-hosted COP20 allowed to create the agreement's draft on climate change, which led to negotiations during the current year. It serves as a basis for the Paris discussion, he noted.

On the other hand, the Minister emphasized Peruvian President Ollanta Humala's request made at the COP21 that urges world's leaders to reach an equitable and ambitious agreement.
