According to Peru’s Ministry of Energy and Mines (MEM), Ancash region remains as the country’s largest producer of copper with 147,284 metric tons and is the national leader of zinc production with 125,321 metric tons produced as of the fifth month of 2015.

A report on metal production issued by MEM’s General Directorate of Mining (DGM) states that Ancash accounts for 24.75% (147,284 MT) of the national copper production totaling 595,119 MT, followed by Cusco and Arequipa, which contribute 15.09% and 13.75%, respectively.

The region’s leadership is associated with the performance of Antamina mining company, which contributes 24.10% to the national production.

As for zinc, Ancash accounts for 22.07% (125,321 MT) of the total volume at the national level, while Pasco ranks second with a contribution of 19.95%.

Once again, Antamina’s performance, provider of 18.85% of national zinc production, has influenced Ancash region’s leadership in production of such metal.

A total of 37 mining units are active in Ancash. They cover 1.07% of its territorial extension.

Other 51 mining units are being explored to identify deposits and their exploration covers 0.85% of the total area.
