Peru ends participation in last round of negotiations prior to COP20

Peruvian mission finished its activities in the city of Bonn, Germany, after three days of work and led by the Environment Minister and COP20 President, Manuel Pulgar-Vidal.

The mission participants took part in the formal negotiations final round before the 20th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP20) to be held in Lima from December 1st to 12th.

“Lima wants to be a platform for Climate Action to boost initiatives in different players in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This ADP`s negotiation meeting lead us towards a solid agreement draft,” said Minister Pulgar-Vidal.

He also stressed a very strong legacy is being built, including the effort by governments, companies and people to play a role in the fight against climate change.

As part of the activities, the team has participated in plenary sessions, briefings on the COP20 logistics progress, meetings with the Secretariat, and bilateral meetings with LDC, AOSIS and Bolivia, among others.

Meanwhile, COP20 General Coordinator, Manuel Beltroy, met with United Nations for Climate Change Secretariat representatives and NGO representatives. 

Beltroy presented the COP20 planned structure and development and showed the Participation Space “Voices for Climate” to be held at the Jockey Club. This Space also seeks the participation of society representatives.

Moreover, the Minister met with Claudia Salerno, Venezuelan Foreign Affairs Vice-Minister to discuss the Pre COP20 to be held in November in Caracas, and with ALBA and LMDC representatives to share the expectations for COP20 in Lima.

This final round of negotiations, that kicked off on October 20 and will run until 25, represents a key opportunity for the governments to develop in depth a solid text for the new draft agreement on climate change, to be signed during the COP21 in 2015 in Paris.
