Following a 1.7% expansion between November 2016 and January 2017, employment generation in Peru is picking up and reflecting a domestic demand rebound, the Economy and Finance Ministry affirmed on Wednesday.
Lima Metropolitan Area's working population grew 1.7% in the November 2016-January 2017 quarter, the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) informed last week.
"Employment generation in Lima's Metropolitan Area in Nov 2016-Jan 2017 has been the highest since the second quarter of 2016," Minister Alfredo Thorne highlighted.
Positive figure
In this sense, Thorne noted the result is "quite a positive figure," but also "an early indicator and not a trend."
However, if sustained, the result could lead to the rebound of formal employment.
"That could underpin the recovery of domestic demand, something we've always wanted to see," he observed.
SMEs employment
On the other hand, the Finance Head underlined employment among SMEs, which posted the most significant increase at 2.7%.
"We have yet to see the results of the next quarter. However, it is a promising indicator that reflects the rebound of domestic demand," he noted.
