Peru has been elected into the 40-member Council of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) for the period of 2014-2015.
After a 32-year absence, the Andean country will serve as one of the Council's 20 Category C member states, which have special interests in maritime transport or navigation and whose election will ensure the representation of all major geographic areas of the world.
Elected together with Peru under Category C were Australia, Bahamas, Belgium, Chile, Cyprus, Denmark, Indonesia, Jamaica, Kenya, Liberia, Malaysia, Malta, Mexico, Morocco, the Philippines, Singapore, South Africa, Thailand and Turkey.
Ten other countries -including China, Greece, Italy, Japan, Norway, Panama, Republic of Korea, Russia, United Kingdom, United States- were elected to be Category A members, which have the largest interest in providing international shipping services.
Under Category B, which includes countries with the largest interest in international seaborne trade, were elected Argentina, Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, India, Netherlands, Spain and Sweden.
The election was done at the 28th session of the IMO Assembly in London on Friday. Following the conclusion of the 28th Assembly, the newly elected Council will meet on December 5 for its 111th session, where it will elect its Chairman and Vice-Chairman for the next biennium.
The International Maritime Organization is the United Nations specialized agency responsible for the safety and security of shipping and the prevention of marine pollution by ships.
