The 22nd World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) General Assembly designated Peru as its Executive Council member for the 2019-2021 period.

The international meeting was held in Chengdu on September 11-16.

Associated with the United Nations system, UNWTO is the major international institution in the field of tourism.

UNWTO includes 156 Member States and its cooperation work comprises technical assistance projects in over 100 countries.

Peru will thus become one of five countries in the Americas that will join UNWTO's high-ranking governing board starting 2019.

In this sense, the Andean nation will consolidate its position within the multilateral system, as well as its key role in the global promotion of sustainable tourism for development.
