Peru’s Health Minister Anibal Velasquez announced he will meet his Ecuadorian counterpart Margarita Guevara in Huaquillas, Ecuador to join forces in stepping up measures against Zika virus.

“We meet because Zika is already in Ecuador, there are cases near the border region, in Oro province; in fact, the Carnival festivities start this week and many people will be traveling from Ecuador to Peru,” he stated.

Attendees at the gathering will implement surveillance actions to identify imported cases from Ecuador.

“Peru is still free of Zika virus. There is only one imported case (a Venezuelan man who had traveled through Colombia) and the idea is to step up the surveillance, which means we have to identify patients experiencing the targeted symptoms, in this case, those coming from Ecuador,” he said.

Velasquez informed that his portfolio and the Tumbes regional government today will open an early diction center in the border region.
