The government of Peru suggested countries should achieve the objectives set to save the planet, during a session of the Organization of American States (OAS), where its Permanent Representative Juan Jimenez Mayor participated.

Speaking from Washington, five days ahead of the COP21 climate summit in Paris, France, Jimenez noted the progress made in the previous edition, in which Peru was the host, as he recalled the event paved the way to reach a final agreement.

He also recalled that countries attending COP20 reached a consensus on the Lima call for climate action and expressly recognized the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities.

Likewise, he added, countries agreed to capitalize the Green Climate Fund (GCF), among other important aspects aimed at saving the planet.

“It not only paves the way for a Paris agreement, but gives hope to the world on the possibility to face climate change severe consequences with political will,” said the Permanent Representative of Peru to the OAS.

The agreement is the only possible way to ensure a future. Failure is not an option. “This huge challenge requires commitment, effort, and joint action of all countries and the Americas,” Jimenez continued.

COP21 will be a historic event for humanity, and governments have the duty to reach a globally binding agreement applicable to all to succeed the Kyoto Protocol.

“Immediate global measures are needed to stop the greenhouse effect; besides, urgent decisions are required to mitigate, adapt and manage disaster risks,” he added.

If actions are not taken, he warned, global temperature might rise by two degrees by the end of the century, resulting in the lack of food, heat waves and more intense storms.
