Public work contracts signed with Brazilian engineering company Odebrecht between 1988 and 2015 led to an alleged US$283-million economic loss for Peru, the Comptroller General's Office revealed on Wednesday.

The sum was determined after corresponding control tasks were carried out. These also identified alleged criminal, civil and administrative liabilities on the part of public officials during the said period.

As part of control measures, the Peruvian Comptroller General's Office audited 16 out of the 23 ventures executed by the construction conglomerate during those years.

"Out of the 23 projects Odebrecht engaged in —valued at US$16.94 billion— we reviewed 16, worth US$11.271 billion. Then, following the audit, an alleged economic loss of US$283 million was determined," the institution informed.

At a press conference, Comptroller General Edgar Alarcon affirmed the Brazilian giant took part in 57 projects with the Peruvian State —whether individually or as a consortium—from 1979 to 2015.

In response, the official proposed the creation of an ad hoc Prosecutor's Office to accumulate all Odebrecht-related cases.

Alarcon also urged the Judiciary to constitute a Court Specialized in Corruption Crimes to comply with procedural terms and deliver results for citizens.
