In 2015 Peru became the planet's first quinoa producer after having recorded an output of 110,000 tonnes and thus displaced Bolivia and Ecuador, the Agriculture and Irrigation Ministry (Minagri) announced.

The said position is even recognized by Bolivian producers, since quinoa production exceeded 1,800 tonnes only in December 2015, Agrarian Policies Monitoring and Assessment Department Director-General Christian Garay affirmed.

"Peru has also become the nation that registers the highest quinoa yields per hectare. In this sense, Arequipa region stands out,” Garay told El Peruano official newspaper.

Over the previous year, the South American country became the first quinoa-exporting nation after having concretized shipments worth approximately US$196 million.

"We export high-quality quinoa mainly to the US and Canadian markets,” the official expressed.

Peru's cuisine boom has invigorated consumption; thus, over 18,000 and close to 3,000 tonnes of the Andean grain arrive in United States and Canada, respectively.

"[...] quinoa is also exported to several European countries," he pointed out.

Since 2013, the flagship product is sold to Poland, Thailand, Singapore, China, Malaysia, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, Romania and Portugal.
