Justice and Human Rights Minister Marisol Perez Tello on Friday affirmed she was confident Peru would achieve the arrest warrant for former President Alejandro Toledo (2001-2006), currently a fugitive from justice holed up in the United States.

"Our work is fully coordinated. We are confident in achieving the detention order [against Toledo] in the short term to submit the extradition file […]," she told reporters.

In this sense, the government official noted the process involves articulated efforts by the Public, Foreign Affairs and Justice Ministries.

In addition, she pointed out the case has not reached extradition proceedings yet.

Likewise, the Justice head indicated authorities would work on both of Toledo's legal processes to prevent any confusion in the U.S., which has a different justice system.

To conclude, she called on the public to understand that progress in the case depends on "this being referred to a court in California."

Remarks were made following a human trafficking prevention event at a school in Lima.
