Peru, China pledge wide-ranging cooperation

President Humala meets with top Chinese leader to increase the high-level exchanges

Peru and China vowed to further deepen and boost the two countries’ Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in a wide range of fields, including trade, energy, industrial infrastructure and the expansion of mutual investment, it was reported Wednesday.
The pledge came in a bilateral meeting between Peru’s President Ollanta Humala and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the ongoing Sixth annual BRICS summit in Brazil’s south-eastern region of Fortaleza.

The upgrade to strategic partnership of China’s bilateral ties with Peru, since 2013, is a relationship which has also be achieved by Brazil and Mexico in South America, thus reflecting the political willingness to enhance the economic and trade cooperation between the two nations.

At the gathering, Humala called for setting up an Agenda for the 21st century with China which involves common development initiatives targeting at social inclusion, the improvement of infrastructure in the Andean nation’s industrial sector and a greater efficiency within national institutions.

Likewise, the two nations committed to encourage mutually beneficial economic cooperation projects, while Humala stressed the need to enhance Peru’s economic and regulatory framework with the aim of staying competitive in a global framework, according to the Government Palace’s Press Secretariat.

Furthermore, in a joint declaration, the two leaders expressed his willingness to speeding up trade and expanding major mutual investment, as well as to diversify exports towards value-added products and to support each other in the overcoming of technical barriers when entering their respective markets.

Therefore, the meeting kicked off the planning of Peru-China bilateral cooperation for the next five years; strengthening it and contributing to the joint efforts to develop the national economy. The priority areas of work for Peru and China are agriculture, education, health and poverty reduction. 
 
Following, the two agreed to assess joint work to be given among organizations attending this year’s Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum and the 2015’s edition set to take place in Peru.

Accompanying President Humala in his talks with China’s top government executive were his Foreign Minister, Gonzalo Gutierrez along with Peru’s ambassador Brazil, Jorge Ballona. 

Apart from taking part at the Brazil summit as the second led of his nine-day three-nation trip, the Peruvian leader has paid a two-day state visit to Germany while he is scheduled to visit Mexico later this week.

Among the world leaders gathering for this year's annual edition of BRICS are Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa.
