Brave military commandos who rescued MRTA hostages at the Japanese ambassador's residence in Lima will be regarded as "Heroes of Democracy" from now on, according to a bill passed by Congress.

The proposed law has also instituted the "Democracy Defender Award."

With 95 votes in favor, 9 against and 3 abstentions, the rule was adopted in the first ballot, with no need for a second one.

After the approval, the Defense Commission noted the Congress' decision of giving commandos their due, and stressed the bravery they showed while putting their lives at risk.

Moreover, Congress honored the hostages, who contributed to the success of the operation to the extent of their ability and courage.

As is known, Chavin de Huantar commandos took part in the rescue of hostages held captive by terrorist Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement (MRTA) in Peru back in 1997.
