Peru: La Candelaria contest lightens up the scenario

The showing of art, skills and color continues at Enrique Torres Belon stadium, since trumpets, drums and bass drums started being heard on Sunday at 7.00 AM and thus marked the beginning of La Candelaria 2016's Light-costume Contest organized by Puno’s Folklore and Culture Regional Federation.

A total of 83 groups will have danced at the sports compound during the day's main event expected to gather close to 15,000 people, among domestic and foreign tourists, who arrived in the Southern Peruvian city to participate the religious Virgen de la Candelaria Festivity, Federation Chairwoman Yenny Silva Quispe said.

Dances such as Rey Moreno, Caporales, Diabladas, Morenadas, Tundiques and Tuntunas; Kullahuadas, Kallahuayas and Llameradas; Acawacas, Tinkus and Tobas; and Sikuris are performed throughout the day.

Each act lasts 8 minutes.

Celebrated each February in the city of Puno, the traditionalfestivity includes activities of religious, festive and culturalcharacter that draw on Catholic traditions and symbolic elements of theAndean worldview.
