Peru and Canada reinforced their cooperation mechanisms of trade promotion and investment following a one-on-one meeting between President Ollanta Humala and the Prime Minister Stephen Harper on Thursday.
During his private meeting held at the Canadian Congress in the capital Ottawa, the two parties agreed to increase cooperation in matters of mutual interest including education, science and technology which are key sectors for boosting Peru’s national development.

With regard to commercial promotion and investments, President Humala hailed the observer status of the North American country in the Pacific Alliance since November 2012. A trading bloc which currently includes Mexico, Chile and Colombia and Peru.

Likewise, he stressed Peru’s interest in reaching a new agreement on climate change at this year’s United Nations Climate Meeting COP20 and, in pursuing that aim, Canada’s attendance at the event will be pivotal.

“Canada represents a support for launching a new package of needed measures to mitigate the harm of climate change,” Humala added.

Regarding security and defense, the two sides discussed an initiative to set up a Public Technological Institute of Higher Education owned by Peru’s Armed Forces, a commitment made by the Canadian Governor General, David Johnston.

As part of his three-day visit, the head of the Peruvian State hold talks with the president of the International Development Research Centre (IDCR), Jean Lebel earlier today; and took part of a ceremonial tree planting on the ground of Rideau Hall.
