Peru's Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Eduardo Ferreyros and Australian Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment Steven Ciobo on Wednesday announced the launch of negotiations towards a "high quality, ambitious and comprehensive free trade agreement (FTA)."
Such arrangement will strengthen the countries' trade ties in terms of goods, services and investments, Minister Ferreyros affirmed.
In addition, it will contribute to the integration of Asia-Pacific and Latin American regions.
"This trade agreement will grant Peruvian products preferential access to a high purchasing power market," he pointed out.
"Similarly, it will increase the transparency and efficiency of sanitary and phytosanitary trade requirements."
Deputy Foreign Trade Minister Edgar Vasquez noted the first round of FTA negotiations is slated for July and will take place in Lima.
Goods
Peruvian food products with major potential for export include asparagus, artichoke, piquillo peppers (prepared and preserved), canned fish, as well as frozen seafood.
Other exports include cotton shirts and other garments, stickers, paper boxes, notebooks, oils, dye, paint, piping accessories, among others.
Services
Regarding services, the government official noted the FTA will seek ambitious results in "services related to mining and manufacturing."
Similarly, Ferreyros expects "a major liberalization in terms of professional services, especially in law, architecture, engineering and design."
