Peruvian Army’s greatest efforts will be directed at putting an end to drug trafficking and assisting the population facing El Niño phenomenon effects, the new General Commander Carlos Enrique Vergara Ciapciak announced.

During the recognition ceremony, held at noon at the Army headquarters, Vergara indicated that fighting drug trafficking in the Valley of the Apurimac, Ene and Mantaro rivers (Vraem) will honor soldiers who sacrificed their lives to support pacification.

“This is a terrible scourge that obstructs development and cast a shadow over the future; this [ending this threat] is the best tribute we can pay to those soldiers, who sacrificed to achieve peacemaking,” he pointed out.

Recurring natural climate events in the country oblige the Army to be prepared and adequate the means to tackle adverse effects they might cause in the population and in the country’s infrastructure.

He recalled that a large-magnitude El Niño event is likely to happen, which is why units must be prepared, especially those over the country’s northern area.

Another priority in his administration involves training the Peruvian Army personnel in managing new military material, which will increase their operational capacity.
