Arequipa's newly established "Pisco Route" will draw some 220,000 foreigners and one million inland tourists each year, Regional Governor Yamila Osorio estimated on Friday.

Some 6,500 people in the surrounding communities will benefit directly and indirectly from this new attraction, she said.

The route includes stops at 17 pisco vaults and in vineyards across the region. Plus, it provides the opportunity to enjoy the region's beautiful landscape.

According to Osorio, there is sufficient material to affirm pisco production in Arequipa region dates back to many years ago.

"This is evidenced in the ancestral vaults along its valleys, for which we plan to file a request to be recognized as national cultural heritage," she underlined.

The route includes three trails: the South Route (La Joya-Vitor-Santa Rita de Siguas), the Center Route (along Majes Valley) and the North Route (Camana-Caraveli).

The initiative is intended to increase tourist stay in the region, promote visits to pisco vaults and place value in this long-ago activity.

The first stage of Pisco Route included a training program and a campaign to raise pisco business owners' awareness.

Likewise, visitors will see many signs leading to vaults and vineyards while on the road.
