Peru's Justice and Human Rights Minister Maria Soledad Perez Tello on Thursday announced the procurement of lawyers in the United States to handle the preventive detention request submitted against former President Alejandro Toledo (2001-2006).

As is known, the fugitive ex-Head of State is wanted by Peruvian justice on influence peddling and money laundering charges within the framework of the massive Odebrecht corruption scandal.

Detention process

Having submitted the said request through the Public Ministry, Peru is now waiting for the petition to be addressed by the Court of California.

"Once it gets there […] it will be handled by the lawyers we are already hiring," the government official told local Radio Exitosa station.

In this sense, the Justice head noted the international detention process works differently in the North American nation, where an Interpol Red Notice alone —like the one issued for Toledo— does not entail an automatic arrest.

"In addition, Toledo is a [U.S. permanent] resident, so it is also necessary to submit the [corresponding] documents to the U.S. Justice Department counterpart," she explained.

To conclude, Minister Perez Tello urged Toledo —once again— to return to Peru and face the said charges.
