Andes Amazon Fund (AAF) will donate US$1 million to help Sierra del Divisor National Park address the challenges of implementing an adequate management by combating threats affecting its conservation status such as illegal logging, gold mining and drug trafficking, the Peruvian Society for Environmental Law –SPDA announced.

Protecting Sierra del Divisor is an important task given its vast territory of 1.3 million hectares — equivalent to 1.5 times the size of Yellowstone, the world’s first national park — and that it contains approximately 165 million metric tons of above-ground carbon, which contributes significantly to reducing greenhouse emissions.

This explains the importance of the support of non-governmental entities, as is the case of Andes Amazon Fund.

Located between Loreto and Ucayali regions, on the Peru-Brazil border area, the Sierra del Divisor National Park has the largest concentration of biodiversity in Peru and is home to endangered species such as the bald-headed uakari monkey, the white-bellied spider monkey, the yellow-tailed woolly monkey and the jaguar.

Along with its sister park across the border in Brazil, Sierra del Divisor National Park forms a major stronghold of planetary importance for nature and indigenous people. Thank you to Peru’s President, Minister of the Environment, and Sernanp for such a critical gift to Peru and to the world,” said Adrian Forsyth of AAF.
