Peru and Chile, an example for international community

Peruvian President Ollanta Humala said his country and Chile have set an example for the international community of how two nations can implement an International Court of Justice ruling in the short term.

After nearly two months of technical talks, Peru and Chile last Tuesday signed an agreement which established the final coordinates of the two countries' new maritime boundary, as requested in the verdict handed down by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague.

President Humala said Wednesday that after establishing the sea limits between Chile and Peru, a new chapter of opportunities and mutual respect can be opened between both countries.

At a ceremony in the Government Palace, in which the technical aspects that will establish the new limits were delivered, Humala highlighted that "the Chilean and Peruvian governments have been working together in order to implement this ruling."

Joining the head of state in the ceremony were Peruvian Foreign Affairs Minister Eda Rivas, Defense Minister Pedro Cateriano and Navy Admiral Carlos Tejada.

Humala praised the speed at which the new sea limits were established: “There have been rulings that have taken more than 40 years to implement and the shortest ones have taken at least 4 years. Today both Chile and Peru can be an example to international community in the way of how a dispute sent to the International Court can be implemented in the short term.”

The Peruvian leader also affirmed that from now on, his country will be a have a new relationship with Chile: “The new chapter that has been opened today in our relationship with Chile is a chapter full of opportunities and mutual respect, in which we are going to make great progress.”

“We have finished with the issue of the sea limits with Chile, something that must fill us with tranquility and joy," he was quoted as saying by website ilovechile.cl.

Finally, the president highlighted the work made by both countries, saying that, “it has been professional and has shown the efficiency of the specialist staff from Chilean and Peruvian navies."
