The Peruvian Government has reiterated its concern about the alteration of constitutional order in fellow South American nation Venezuela before the Organization of American States (OAS).

Peruvian Ambassador to OAS Ana Rosa Valdivieso requested the formation of a contact group to facilitate the dialogue between the Venezuelan government and opposition, thus helping the country address its pressing issues.

Above all, the measure is intended to assist the Bolivarian nation in reaching solutions for its humanitarian crisis, as well as the release of political prisoners, the establishment of an electoral calendar and respect for National Assembly resolutions.

Valdivieso's intervention took place during an extraordinary session of OAS Permanent Council. The Inca nation and other 17 Member States called the meeting in order to assess Venezuela's situation.

Peru's representative affirmed "the Executive's co-opting of public powers, the systematic blocking of National Assembly decisions and the failure to call for elections hinder the democratic exercise of power."

In this vein, "the effective enforcement of the rule of law, as well as the compliance with Venezuela's Constitution and laws" have also been compromised.

Valdivieso added agreements reached by Venezuela's government and opposition as part of the dialogue backed by former presidents and the Holy See "have not translated into effective measures that give concrete solutions to the aforementioned problems."

In this respect, the official noted countries in the region must cooperate effectively to resolve the crisis.
