Pope Francis's encyclical on ecology will be delivered to Amazonian communities during a meeting in Puerto Maldonado city (Madre de Dios region), Apostolic Nuncio to Peru Monsignor Nicola Girasoli announced on Friday.

The aim is to address environmental issues and the defense of the Amazon area —both critical issues for the planet's future.

The Vatican representative in Peru affirmed this will be one of the most important activities of the Holy Father's visit to the country —scheduled for January 18–21 next year.

The meeting with indigenous communities will take place Friday, January 19.

Monsignor Girasoli said that during his visit to Puno's Ayaviri district, he was pleased by locals' high expectations as they await the Supreme Pontiff's arrival.

"The whole nation is waiting for him," he expressed.
